Illustration & Custom Lettering
Original illustration and hand lettering, drawn rather than licensed.
Custom illustration is artwork made for one brand and owned by that brand. Hand lettering is type drawn by hand for a specific use rather than set in an existing font. Both exist for the same reason: there are things a photograph cannot show and a typeface cannot say.
Stock is fine until it is not. The moment a competitor licenses the same image, or the concept you need does not exist as a photo, or the thing you are illustrating has never been photographed, you are out of options. The research pipeline everyone relies on to find that image is breaking down too. That is the point where this work starts paying for itself.
Everyone has the same libraries. Drawn work is the one part of a brand that nobody else can license out from under you.
The other reason is sameness. Everyone has access to the same libraries and the same generators, which is why so much marketing looks alike now. We wrote about that.
Style follows the brand rather than the illustrator. The line quality, the palette, the level of detail, and how far it pushes from realism are all decisions made against your identity, not a house style applied on top of it.
Lettering is its own discipline. A logotype, a headline, a book cover, or a piece of packaging needs letterforms that fit that word at that size, which is a different job from choosing a typeface. Where it makes sense, drawn letters can be built out into a working font.
This work usually arrives inside something bigger, whether that is a brand identity, a campaign, or marketing materials. It can also be commissioned on its own.

Estimates, not promises. What moves them: current studio capacity, how many deliverables are in scope, and how complex they are.
Who This Is For
- Brands that keep running into the limits of stock
- Campaigns built around a concept no photo can show
- Publishers, packaging, and anything with a cover
- Organizations whose category all looks the same
Every project is scoped individually. See how scoping works. Not sure a studio is the right fit? Compare it against an agency, a freelancer, and a full-time hire.
Quick Answers
What is the difference between custom illustration and stock?
Stock is licensed art that anyone else can license too. Custom illustration is drawn for one brand, made to fit a specific concept and visual system, and licensed to that brand alone.
Who owns the illustration?
You own the finished illustration outright on full payment. You get layered files another designer or printer can open and work from, along with final formats and guidance on how the art should be used.
How much does custom illustration cost?
Illustration is quoted per piece, and a spot set or an icon system is quoted as a package, because a single editorial piece and a twenty-icon system are not the same job. Usage matters too: art for one campaign is scoped differently from art you will use everywhere for years.
How long does illustration take?
Most projects run two to six weeks. It swings more than other work here, since a single spot illustration and a packaging system are not the same job. You get a delivery date in writing before the drawing starts.
Can hand lettering become a real font?
Hand lettering can become a working font, though not always. Drawn letters for one headline are not a typeface, but where the use case justifies it, lettering can be developed into a full character set.
